As Haiti’s gang violence surges, can Kenyan peacekeepers make a difference?

For the second time in a week, gangs have invaded a town outside Haiti’s capital, Port Au Prince, leaving a wake of death and destruction in their path.

The latest uptick in violence comes several months after Kenyan peacekeeping troops arrived in the country to help restore order in Haiti — a country where more than 700,000 people have fled from violence and chaos, and nearly half the population faces food insecurity.

While the Kenyan forces have made progress in their mission,  many question whether a scant 400 soldiers can have much impact when they’re up against 15,000 gang members.

New York Times reporter Frances Robles recently embedded with a group of Kenyan police officers on patrol in the capital. Robles talks with host Scott Tong.
