Legacy & Strategic Giving
LEGACY GIVING
Legacy gifts offer creative, flexible strategies for your estate and charitable planning. These techniques make use of legal and tax strategies to best suit your unique situation and help you accomplish the personal and philanthropic goals that mean the most to you.
Types of legacy gifts include bequests, trust provisions, retirement fund beneficiary designations, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of an asset such as personal property or real estate.

IRAs, STOCKS, & DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS
IRA Distributions
The IRA Charitable Rollover (also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution) is an excellent way to support WBHM and receive tax benefits in return. Donors aged 70.5 and older can take advantage of this technique and transfer up to $100,000 directly from a qualified retirement plan to WBHM. You won’t pay any income tax on the charitable transfer and, if you must take Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), the transfer counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution. STOCKS
Using securities that have gone up in value since you bought them is an excellent way to make a gift to WBHM. In most cases you will be entitled to an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift and will not have to report capital gain income. You may use securities to make your annual gift to WBHM, contribute a special gift, or to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable trust. Access stock transfer notification form and instructions here.
DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
WBHM, as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, does accept gifts through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs). To make a gift through your DAF, first contact your financial/legal advisor or your DAF representative to recommend a grant to WBHM at UAB. We hope you will choose to include your contact information with your gift so that we can thank you for your generosity. Your DAF administrator may require the following information:

Limitations to donating through a donor-advised fund:
- Donors cannot use their DAF to pay off an already existing debt or obligation.
- Money in DAFs have already received tax deductions, therefore a gift from a DAF cannot be used to pay for goods and services, such as event tickets or thank you gifts.
FOUNDATION SUPPORT
Grants from family, corporate, and community foundations are vital to sustaining WBHM and its public service mission. These resources help fuel the station’s general operations and, more importantly, enable WBHM to expand its local journalism, enhance our FM signal and our digital offerings, and create other distinctive programming for Birmingham and the heart of Alabama.
To learn more about the ways your foundation or organization can support WBHM and specific projects and programs, please contact Will Dahlberg, Executive Director, at 205-934-2264 or [email protected]
MATCHING GIFTS
Many employers offer matching gift programs that can double your contribution to WBHM, providing vital additional resources that support the station’s work. If your company participates, request and complete your employer’s matching gift form and submit it with each donation. Most companies require forms within about 90 days, and sustaining members can typically use their annual tax receipt to document yearly giving.
While UAB does not match employee gifts, employees may still support WBHM through payroll deduction. For questions about matching gifts, email Sabrina Balch at [email protected].
