Alabama is thawing out today after the state was hit with a winter storm Friday that brought several inches of snow, tens of thousands power outages and hazardous road conditions.

About 40,000 homes were still without power this afternoon after a winter storm blanketed the state Friday with snow and ice. Statewide about 85,000 lost power at some point during the storm, according to Alabama Power.

Most of the damage from downed power lines and tree limbs was in the eastern part of the state. Those areas picked up 10 inches of snow, while four inches fell in Birmingham, prompting schools, government offices and businesses to close.

Most roads that were closed Friday reopened today. Officials warned there was still some icing on bridges and overpasses this morning. Police in some eastern counties have reported several traffic accidents.
