In a deal totaling more than $208 million, the Alabama Department of Transportation has entered a contract with a California construction company that will begin Phase Two of the I-20/59 Bridge Project.

Phase Two involves redesigning and constructing the new interchange ramps at I-65. Granite Construction Incorporated will build new ramps to 17th Street and 6th Avenue North, as well as construct new ramps from 11th Avenue North to the Interstate System. The project also involves construction between Arkadelphia Road and I-65 on I-20/59.

According to ALDOT, access to and from downtown will remain open during phase two. Granite will complete all work on the new ramps leading into and out of the city before access points for Phase Three are closed.

Work on Phase One is nearing completion, ALDOT says. This phase was necessary in order to avoid major traffic issues during construction of the later phases, and is a precursor for the work that will be completed in Phase Two.
