Light to moderate snowfall is expected across most of the state Tuesday, and many schools and government offices are closing or dismissing early. No more than 2 inches are expected, but the National Weather Service warns temperatures in the 20s will likely make travel conditions difficult and potentially dangerous. The snow threat lasts through early Wednesday. Many school districts have said they’ll determine on Tuesday whether to close on Wednesday.

Alabamians should expect dangerous conditions across the state as winter weather moves through Tuesday. That’s according to the Alabama Department of Transportation and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. ALDOT spent the afternoon pre-treating interstates and primary highways. But officials warn even treated roadways can still become dangerous. The National Weather Service projects snowfall of less than 2 inches, but the impact will be amplified by extremely cold temperatures in the 20s. The snow potential lasts through Wednesday. Gov. Kay Ivey has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of severe weather.

She has directed essential state agencies to be ready should they be needed over the next two days. She urged state residents to take necessary precautions now and stay informed of the latest weather forecasts for their area.

“The State of Emergency will ensure that all available state resources are ready if and when they are needed,” Ivey said in a statement Monday.
