Former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville and former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will likely head to a runoff later this month with neither raking in 50% of the votes. The runoff will determine who will face Democrat Doug Jones in November.

Amendment One is not likely to pass with about 25% voting in favor of the measure. Gov. Kay Ivey called the amendment “a bold and ambitious effort.” Ivey says she plans to find other ways to improve the state’s education system which is often near the bottom in national education rankings.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump won the presidential nominations in Alabama, according to the Associated Press.
Amendment One
Voters will also decide Tuesday whether the Alabama School Board should be elected or appointed by the governor. Currently, state school board leaders are elected by voters. If passed, Amendment One would allow the governor to appoint the board, but it any appointee would have to be confirmed by the Senate before serving.
Under the amendment, the state board would be renamed the Alabama Commission on Elementary and Secondary Education. This commission would be required to adopt a new set of standards in lieu of Common Core.
Amendment One also calls for the new board to reflect the geographic, gender and racial diversity of students enrolled in Alabama schools. Members would be limited to two six-year terms.
