Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s office said he never received an invitation to a town hall in Birmingham held for his constituents last month. The organizers beg to differ.

Tuberville was one of three Republican leaders invited to a town hall hosted by the left-leaning Birmingham Indivisible on March 22.

When all three Republicans failed to attend, volunteers propped up cardboard cutouts of them on the stage. Residents railed their representatives’ cardboard stand-ins with questions about federal funding and staff cuts. A Tuberville spokesperson told WBHM the event was a “set up,” saying he never received an invite.

“This was never about giving Alabamians an opportunity to ask questions, as Senator Tuberville does every week during his press call,” staff wrote. “This Democrat activist dark money organization had one goal: to smear Senator Tuberville and intentionally mislead Birmingham residents. They should be ashamed of themselves.”

However, Birmingham Indivisible has since shared emails with WBHM that show volunteers with the group submitted a request on March 10 for Tuberville’s attendance at their town hall. A scheduler for the senator wrote back just hours later. She thanked the group for the invite to the March 22 town hall, but said the senator had a previous engagement and could not make it.

Tuberville’s staff did not respond to a request for comment or clarification on the email.
