Mayor Randall Woodfin and Darlene Negrotto, Vulcan Park and Museum CEO, announced on Monday a series of events to celebrate Birmingham’s 150 anniversary. Here are a few things you can look forward to for the rest of the year:

1. Fireworks: Thunder on the Mountain is Birmingham’s biggest event every year on the Fourth of July. However, this year it will be bigger than ever. Negrotto said this year’s fireworks show will be the biggest in the state and will include music about Birmingham.

2. Love letters To The Magic City: Residents can write a letter to Birmingham expressing “I Love Birmingham because….” All letters will be archived in the Birmingham Public Library. The deadline to submit letters is Dec. 19, 2021, the city’s official birthday.

3. Milestone Monday: Every Monday, Birmingham will celebrate significant milestones for people, businesses and organizations in 2021. If you live, work, or volunteer in Birmingham, you can nominate someone. Just submit their photos along with the milestone they’re celebrating by emailing [email protected]. All businesses and organizations that want to be considered must be based in Birmingham.

4. Weekly History Tips: The city of Birmingham will ask “Did You Know” every Thursday on social media and at www.birminghamal.gov/bhamhistory. History buffs and newbies can leave comments on the weekly historic entries.

5. Kickball Classic: The Legion Field Kickball Classic has already started. If you missed the first game on June 10, that’s okay, the adult co-ed kickball series will continue until July 22. Admission is free, so anyone can join. There will also be food trucks and concessions available.

Events will take place throughout the rest of 2021 until Dec. 19. For more information, visit https://www.birminghamal.gov/150.
