Bill Veitch, a Republican candidate for Jefferson County District Attorney, has appealed to the state Supreme Court to have his name placed on a countywide ballot.

Jefferson County courts are divided into the Birmingham division and the Bessemer cutoff. The cutoff includes much of west Jefferson County and parts of Hoover.

Veitch wants to halt the printing of ballots for the June 5 party primaries so his name can be included.

Probate Judge Alan King says the names of Birmingham division candidates for district attorney are only included throughout the county on the general election in November. But election results for the 2016 primary show that two Democrats in the Birmingham division district attorney’s race were on the ballot throughout the county. The Republican did not have primary opposition.

“They changed the rules without telling anybody,” Veitch says. “The cutoff residents are expected to trust Birmingham voters to pick the best candidate for them and to be silent.”

Veitchs says he filed the appeal Friday morning. There has been no notice of action by the court.
