Birmingham City Council Appoints Two New Members
The Birmingham City Council appointed two new members today to fill vacancies in District 1 and District 6.
The new councilman for District 1 in northeast Birmingham is Clinton Woods. He is the current transition director for Mark Pettway, Jefferson County sheriff-elect. The new District 6 councilwoman is Crystal Smitherman, a law student at the University of Alabama. Her mother, Judge Carol Smitherman, previously represented the southwest Birmingham district. Her father is state Sen. Rodger M. Smitherman.
The council voted on the appointments following interviews with the final six candidates, remaining from a total 26 who interviewed last week in the initial round.
The new council members will be sworn in on Jan. 2, and they will serve until the next citywide election. That date has not yet been determined. The two seats were vacated by councilors Lashunda Scales and Sheila Tyson when they were sworn in to the Jefferson County Commission in November.
