Moore Seeks to Block Certification of Election Results
Republican Senate Candidate Roy Moore has filed a lawsuit to block certification of the election in which he narrowly lost earlier this month. Moore says the results shouldn’t be finalized. Instead, potential voting irregularities should be investigated and a new election called.
Moore lost the election by about 20,000 votes and says voting anomalies around Birmingham could have swung the election the other way. He’s calling for an investigation of voter fraud and a new election.
The lawsuit comes less than a day before the state is scheduled to certify the results which saw Democrat Doug Jones eke out a win. Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill says his office has found no evidence of voter fraud and certification of the results will continue as planned today.
The lawsuit also says Moore has taken a polygraph test which shows allegations of sexual misconduct against him are false. During the campaign, Moore was accused of sexual contact or inappropriate relationships with teenage girls when he was in his 30s.
