The issues around the Birmingham City Schools are well documented. It’s a high-poverty district that often performs poorly in education rankings. But the school system is also a critical part of the social fabric affecting everything from the workforce to crime to economic development.

The weekly newspaper Weld is launching a year-long series on the Birmingham City Schools. Weld editor Nick Patterson tells WBHM’s Andrew Yeager what’s behind some of the school system’s struggles.
