UAB Names Ehsan New Men’s Basketball Coach
The UAB Men’s basketball team has a new coach. Robert Ehsan will be the sixth head coach of the program. Ehsan was formally introduced by UAB Athletics Director Mark Ingram during a Tuesday afternoon press conference at Bartow Arena.
“Rob has been an integral part of the resurgence of UAB Basketball, and he emerged as the clear-cut choice to be our head coach after an exhaustive, national search that included candidates from all corners of the basketball world,” said Ingram in a release announcing Ehsan’s selection.
Ehsan worked under Jerod Haase for four seasons and was named interim head coach when Haase went to Stanford University. Ehsan says he’s ready to get to work.
Last year and last season was special, but I have a sense of unfinished business and I know you do too,” Ehsan told the crowd. “We’re now a mature, experienced, committed and confident group, and when we take the court in November, we are going to see a team that’s determined to make next season another memorable chapter in the history of UAB.”
Ehsan’s been recognized nationally as a rising star in coaching and a natural recruiter. Prior to his time at UAB, he spent a season as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech and six seasons at the University of Maryland, where he was heavily involved with many aspects of the program, including coaching, recruiting and academics.
UAB recently celebrated back-to-back Conference USA championships, as well as a 2015 NCAA Tournament run to the Round of 32.
