Former UAB Quarterback Talks Concussions
At WBHM’s Issues and Ales: Concussions and the Price of Playing Football, former UAB quarterback and NFL veteran Kevin Drake answers some audience questions that the panelists didn’t get to address in the discussion.
Drake is the program director for the Wise Up Initiative, and he says one of the biggest problems with concussions is that too many go under the radar.
He cited a study done by Harvard and Boston University that revealed that 26 out of 27 concussion cases goes undetected.
“That’s obviously a big issue,” Drake said, “and hopefully we’ll narrow that down.”
Drake also answered a question about doctor qualifications for concussion diagnosis.
“It has to be a doctor that is trained and educated in concussions,” he said, “and that needs to happen across the board and that’s only in high school, that’s not only in youth. If you suffered a concussion you need to go to someone who has been trained in the field of concussions.”
