WBHM 90.3 FM’s education reporter Dan Carsen has been named a fellow in Renaissance Journalism’s initiative, “The Equity Reporting Project: Restoring the Promise of Education.”

The project is designed to produce coast-to-coast coverage of the opportunity gap affecting the nation’s schoolchildren and is being developed in conjunction with the Ford Foundation’s “More and Better Learning Time Initiative,” which supports new and innovative ways to redesign learning opportunities for students.

Only 31 journalists from across the country have been selected to participate, and each one will produce a project that will be showcased on Renaissance Journalism’s website and in other media.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Carsen. “I couldn’t help but reflect on that at the recent conference in Detroit, where the caliber of the other journalists was beyond impressive. And the same is true of the researchers and experts who’ve done groundbreaking work and then kindly allowed us to pick their brains.”

Renaissance Journalism provides training, technical assistance, consultation and grants to journalists and organizations who share the group’s passion for media innovations that strengthen communities.

“We’re very excited and proud that Dan was chosen,” said Rachel Lindley, WBHM’s News Director. “This fellowship allows Dan and WBHM to strengthen our commitment to in-depth reporting on issues of education and inequity — a topic often overlooked in the media.”

Dan’s project will air and be published in June of 2015 or earlier.
