Position Summary:

WBHM, a listener-supported service of UAB, is seeking a talented, creative, and well-organized professional to join our team. This is a highly creative, collaborative, and strategic role. WBHM’s Digital Designer plays an integral role in the overall success of the station, particularly with digital growth and engagement, as well as managing marketing and communications for the station. This person will also be responsible for collaboration with team members on website platform updates and maintenance for each department. You will be helping to lead WBHM’s audience development with our digital brands and find new ways to meet listeners where they are. You will work in a collaborative environment with cross-functional teams to support the needs of WBHM. You must have a commitment to community engagement and a desire to build community around the content that WBHM creates.

This person will design and create digital assets for marketing campaigns that are visually compelling and optimized for user experience across all digital devices and platforms. This person will understand the digital media landscape—with a specific focus on public media and non-profit news—and take an audience centered design approach. This person needs to be an effective communicator and be responsive to feedback. This position is required to keep abreast of best practices in the field and remain up to date on current trends and new technologies. This position should anticipate change and ensure the organization is positioned to succeed.

This is primarily an in-person position with some flexibility for hybrid work. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekend hours for events.

WBHM is a leading public media station in Alabama and home to the Gulf States Newsroom—a multistate collaboration in partnership with NPR, WWNO, WRKF, and MPB. Our news organization is focused on producing accountability journalism, stories that reflect the uniqueness of our community, and engaging deeply with the diverse communities and people across Alabama. Since 1976, WBHM has produced incisive local news on the radio and emerging digital platforms, complementing the national and global reporting of our partners at NPR, APM, PRX, among others. WBHM was named “Radio Station of the Year” by the Alabama Broadcasters Association in 2020 and 2021, and recently won two National Murrow Awards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains the WBHM brand and ensures all assets adhere to UAB and media partners brand guidelines.
  • Will work closely with Sponsorship on their monthly sponsors list and other digital website materials.
  • Actively participate in WBHM events in the community.
  • Works with the Executive Director on an ongoing basis to help track information and write annual reports, CPB reports, and other marketing materials.
  • This person will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with other members of WBHM’s Leadership Team.
  • Is responsible for coordinating WBHM’s weekly promotional agenda and meeting, and communications with our team about that work.
  • Manage WBHM’s digital accounts and engagement (non-newsroom content, including but not limited to our brand, membership, sponsorship, etc…), but would work closely with and coordinate with news-team to prevent overlap and issues on our accounts.
  • Monitor our digital communications (i.e. provide general responses for FAQ’s and direct messages to different departments for necessary responses).
  • Understands programming languages such as HTML and CSS, and designs mock-ups and wireframes.
  • Implement and manage the operation of Marketing Cloud for our team (our departments will help provide copy, this person would help manage the lists, programming of e-mails).
  • Manage our newsletter(s) and other digital marketing products in consultation with leadership team members.
  • Monitor WBHM’s digital KPI’s and share findings, insights, and trends to help advise our work.
  • Will assist in graphic design needs as necessary.
  • Creates compelling digital assets for marketing campaigns, including static and interactive advertising units, websites and landing pages, emails, and social media.
  • Monitors and engages with NPR and content partners digital efforts and resources.
  • Assist with WBHM’s digital station voice and presence for our brand on various platforms.
  • Assist in growing WBHM’s digital footprint, including development of goals for the organization.
  • Assist in WBHM’s digital audience development.
  • Assist in digital product development and implementation for WBHM and various departments.
  • Assist and be a backup for WBHM’s basic website management and needs.
  • Assist as a backup in a non-editorial capacity for WBHM’s news team (i.e.: distribution and sharing stories and content, but not writing headline or copy.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $46,530 – $55,000

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
