Come be WBHM’s new environmental reporter and bring stories to our audience from one of the most biodiverse states in the country. You’ll cover an array of topics from climate change to sustainability to pollution to the natural world. The ideal candidate can break down public policy and scientific concepts while finding compelling sources who engage listeners and readers. The job requires a keen eye for stories, attention to detail, versatility and excellent news judgment.

Your work will air on WBHM, publish online at wbhm.org and posted on the station’s social media platforms. We’re also interested to hear your ideas. What can you bring to the table to push WBHM’s journalism forward? 

WBHM is part of the Gulf States Newsroom, a regional collaboration among stations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana and NPR, which will allow your stories to be shared across the region. Our reporters are also regularly on NPR News and other national programs and podcasts. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

·     Pitch, report and produce feature, spot and digital stories for WBHM

·     Participate in interviews with WBHM hosts

·     Stay up-to-date on issues affecting Birmingham and Alabama

·     Work collaboratively with others in the WBHM newsroom and editorial partners

·     Participate in station fundraising

·     Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Media, Communications or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Minimum hiring rate must meet the most current FLSA guidelines for salary level and basis to remain exempt. 

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·     A proven track record of reporting in a journalistic setting

·     Excellent communication and organizational skills and demonstrated writing ability

·     Familiarity with audio storytelling, the public media system and community engagement

·     Ability to work independently and as part of a team 

·     Deep knowledge of Birmingham, Alabama and the South

·     Multilingual candidates encouraged to apply

Annual Salary Range: $50,050 – $81,330

This is a 3-year, grant-funded position. Future funding is not guaranteed, although we are committed to finding sustainable sources of support for the position.

This is a full-time position based at WBHM in Birmingham, AL. The reporter is a University of Alabama at Birmingham employee enjoying all full-time staff benefits.
