Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said he is not done with the mayor’s office.

“I’m running for a third term,” Woodfin told WBHM during an interview on Monday.

Woodfin was widely expected to make another run following electoral victories in 2017 and 2021. This year’s contest will take place August 26.

The 43-year-old Birmingham native earned his law degree from Cumberland Law School at Samford University. Woodfin previously worked as an attorney for the city of Birmingham and served as president of the Birmingham Board of Education.

His tenure has seen a good working relationship with the city council and many neighborhood associations, but he has lately faced criticism for an increase in gun violence in the city.

While overall crime was down last year, the city saw a record 149 homicides in 2024, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

According to The Birmingham Times, Woodfin raised more than $300,000 in the first five days campaign fundraising was allowed in the current election cycle.

Woodfin’s comments follow an announcement from State Rep. Juandalynn Givan, who said last week she plans to run for the city’s top office.
