A person of interest is in custody today following a fatal shooting Wednesday at Huffman High School, Birmingham police say. Courtlin Arrington, 17, was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital Wednesday evening. The shooting occurred at 3:40 p.m.

Lt. Peter Williston, spokesman for the Birmingham Police Department, said “no information will be released on that individual, pending a review of the case by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

A male student who was wounded in the shooting was treated and released from UAB, according to a Birmingham police spokesman.

Huffman High School is closed today following a Wednesday shooting that killed one student and injured another.

Superintendent Lisa Herring said Huffman High School is closed today to help students and faculty deal with the tragedy. Authorities will also be doing a full security sweep of the school, she says.

Lt. Peter Williston, spokesman for the Bimingham Police Department, said “no information will be released on that individual, pending a review of the case by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Mayor Randall Woodfin was at the school Wednesday with the superintendent. “Today, we lost a 17-year-old student — a daughter, a niece, a grandchild — an incredible person that was aspiring to be a nurse. Our hearts are heavy,” he said.

Woodfin says Arrington would have turned 18 next month and had already been accepted to college.

Gov. Kay Ivey released a statement Wednesday expressing condolences to the family and concern for the Huffman community

“Every life is precious and, even though this was an accident, it reaffirms that there is no place for students to have firearms or other weapons on campus,” Ivey said.
