Why I Support WBHM: Rachel Brewer
During This Pledge Drive, We’re asking WBHM Members why they listen and what WBHM means to them.
Rachel Brewer is a UAB grad student and WBHM member. Even as a long-time public radio listener, she has beef with a treasured classic.
“After church every Sunday, my mom would listen to A Prairie Home Companion,” she says. “I was not really a big fan. It was about as boring as I could imagine,” she admits.
Although Garrison Keillor wasn’t exactly her childhood hero, public radio was a familiar place to return to when she moved to Alabama for graduate school.
“I turned down to the low end of the dial and found WBHM,” she says, “and that’s when I really started listening each day.”
Rachel hopes listeners will contribute and pass along the legacy of public radio to future generations like her mother did for her.
“I thought about how much of an influence she had on me,” she recalls, “always listening to public radio when we were growing up.”
