WBHM’s Spring 2014 Membership Campaign to Feature Collaboration with Local Artist

Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM/WSGN 91.5 FM’s Spring 2014 Membership Campaign will begin Wednesday, April 2, and feature a collaboration with local artist Charles Buchanan.

In response to outreach from WBHM’s Junior Advisors, Buchanan has created a custom and public radio-inspired design for the station with the theme “Around Your Block; Around the World” depicting the interconnectedness of the public radio community with Birmingham, and the City with the world. The art will be featured on a glass given as a thank-you gift from the station for contributions of $90 or more.

Around Your Block; Around Your World

“The minute I heard that I had been selected as the artist for WBHM’s Spring 2014 Membership Campaign, my mind started spinning with the creative possibilities,” says Buchanan. “I had a great time hand-carving and hand-printing the piece, a fun and energetic ode to WBHM’s role in connecting listeners to important stories in the community and around the world. I’m excited that this print will help keep those stories flowing in our city.”

Read more about Buchanan, his inspiration, and the printmaking process.

In response to listener comments, the Spring 2014 Membership Campaign will be the first of only two drives this year. Listener support is WBHM’s chief source of funding, and the station’s goal is to raise $250,000 during this campaign.

“This collectable glass is a fun way to celebrate how WBHM and NPR bring us together,” says Scott Hanley, WBHM’s general manager. “It’s a small token of our appreciation for the trust we have in you, our listeners, for supporting WBHM’s programming.”

Also during the station’s Spring 2014 Membership Campaign, WBHM will continue its tradition of welcoming community members as guest hosts, including Buchanan who will talk more about how public radio inspires him. Other guests will include Cadence Bank commercial relationship manager Gaines Livingston, actress and story performer Delores Hydock, Dogtrot Studio Communications + Brand Strategy Consultant Laura Kate Whitney, Birmingham Decorative Concrete owner Brandon Meeks, and Friends Board members Bob Loftin and Sharon Stuart.

In addition to listener donations, the station also receives significant funding from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, various grants, business underwriting and donations of vehicles. Donations may be made in advance and during the drive by calling 800-444-9246 or online.
