Alabama ranks 48th in child well-being. That’s according to the annual Kids Count report, released this week by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The report measures well-being through a number of benchmarks–from babies with low birth weight to the number of children in single parent families. Despite the low ranking, Alabama is making progress in some areas, including teen pregnancy and the high school dropout rate. Laura Beavers is coordinator of the Kids Count study. She says progress in Alabama is part of a national trend, but the economic downturn could erase some of the state’s gains.

See where Alabama and other states rank in the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count 2009 data book.
