Alabama House Set to Consider Gas Tax Increase

Alabama House members on Friday are expected to consider a bill to increase the state’s gas tax by 10 cents a gallon. A House committee unanimously approved a bill on Thursday, which would increase the tax over three years.

The revenue would go toward improving the state’s roads and bridges, which many say are in dire need of upgrades. Gov. Kay Ivey in her State of the State address on Tuesday said improving the state’s infrastructure is her top priority. She said half of the state’s bridges are past their 50-year life span.

For our weekly legislative wrap-up, we turn to Don Dailey, host of Alabama Public Television’s Capitol Journal. He says it’s not yet entirely clear how strong support will be for this bill. Reaction from lawmakers has been mixed.
