Winter Weather School Delays on Monday January 8

Some schools will be delayed this morning due to the potential for winter weather. Those include schools in Anniston, Boaz, Etowah County, Oxford, and others opening three hours late. Gadsden State Community College opens at 10:30.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for East Alabama, where a few places could see temperatures of 32 degrees. Periods of freezing rain and sleet were expected overnight and into this morning.  Higher elevations could see ice accumulations, especially on bridges and trees.

Those traveling to Atlanta along I-20 this morning for today’s National Championship game are urged to use caution.

The National Weather Service expects conditions to improve as temperatures increase by mid-morning.

Separately, Woodlawn High School is closed to students today due to an issue with the gas supply to the building. The issue affects heat and meal preparation for the school’s more than 700 students. Officials say they are working to resolve the issue.
