Two people have died, including a gunman after an active shooter situation at UAB Highlands Wednesday evening.
Birmingham police say a shooter there was pronounced dead due to self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Of the two other victims, one died during surgery, and the other was in stable condition. Birmingham police say they received a call for an active shooter at the hospital just before 7 pm. In their search, they found the suspect dead. The hospital has canceled all surgeries scheduled for Thursday. Birmingham Police Lt. Pete Williston said on Wednesday there is no threat to the public.

Dear UAB Medicine employees,
It is with a heavy heart that we announce to you this evening the passing of one of our colleagues after a shooting at UAB Highlands. One other employee was also injured. The Birmingham Police Department is investigating the incident, and we cannot release any additional information at this time. We ask that you please join us in prayer for these families, those who work where the incident occurred, and those who were immediately on the scene, including the first responders who acted so heroically under extremely difficult circumstances. Counseling services will be provided throughout the night and tomorrow for employees. All UAB Highlands Hospital surgeries scheduled for tomorrow are canceled. All other hospital operations will operate under regular business hours
The victims and the person who died from the self-inflicted wound have not been publicly identified.
