Monuments Law Adds to Alabama’s Troubled Story

This Confederate veterans memorial monument, erected in 1905, stands at the entrance to Linn Park in downtown Birmingham.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has signed a bill into law that would prevent removal of long-standing historic monuments, including those connected to the Confederacy. This comes as New Orleans took down four monuments earlier this month honoring figures from the Confederacy including General Robert E Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The move drew praise and criticism and prompted New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to give a speech explaining his decision. Alabama Media Group columnist John Archibald discusses the issues and the idea of what story we’re telling about ourselves.
