Fat Sam’s Sub Station owner Salman Shatara died last night from complications following a car wreck on April 8. According to a report on AL.com, he developed a blood clot while recovering from major injuries and severe respiratory problems.
Shatara was 55 and a huge supporter of the UAB community, with his restaurant becoming a popular hangout among its students, faculty and staff.
Shortly after the accident, the family created the Fat Sam Recovery Fund to help pay for medical bills. AL.com reported the fund raised more than $8,000 in its first eleven days. The goal set is $50,000 and as of this writing, it is currently at $12,512.
Shatara’s son Mitri told AL.com, “It’s been a huge outpouring of text messages and phone calls from people telling me, ‘Your father did this for me, your father did that for me.’ It’s been exhausting, but in a good way.”
Shatara’s visitation will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church, 425 16th Ave. South, Birmingham. A service will follow at 7 p.m. The funeral will be on Monday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the church.
