Primary voters going to the polls March 1 will see one statewide ballot measure to amend the Alabama Constitution. Amendment One deals with retirement for future district attorneys and circuit clerks of the state.
Currently those positions are part of Alabama’s supernumerary service system. This amendment would allow the state to set up a new retirement program for district attorneys and circuit clerks elected or appointed after November 8, 2016. The amendment not only authorizes that action, but according to a summary by the state’s Fair Ballot Commission, it also offers details about the new system.
If the amendment were approved, new district attorneys and circuit clerks would be under a retirement plan overseen by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, as is the case for many state employees. They’d be required to contribute 8.5 percent of their salary toward the retirement plan. A retiree could draw benefits after age 62 if he or she has 10 or more years of service.

“Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to authorize the legislature to provide a retirement program for district attorneys and circuit clerks of the state who are first elected or appointed on or after November 8, 2016.”

Shelby County Local Amendment One
This proposed amendment to the Alabama Constitution will appear on Shelby County ballots. It would authorize Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages after 12 p.m. in the county.

“Relating to Shelby County, proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to authorize the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sunday after 12:00 p.m. by properly licensed retail licensees of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. (Proposed by 2015-43)”
