Broken Gas Pipe Removed, Investigation Underway

Workers examine a gasoline pipeline owned by Colonial Pipeline that leaked up to 336,000 gallons of fuel in Shelby County.

An investigation is underway into what caused a gas pipeline to start leaking near Helena.

Officials with Colonial Pipeline say the broken pipe was removed over the weekend and sent to an outside firm for investigation. Crews constructed a 500 foot bypass to circumvent the broken pipe before it was removed.

Colonial says they identified the location from which gas was leaking out of the pipe, but have not yet determined the cause.

An Alabama state mine inspector discovered the gas leak early last month in a containment pond in Shelby County. Up to 336,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from the line that funnels fuel from Texas to New Jersey.
