A New Leader for Birmingham Southern College

Birmingham-Southern College says it needs help after years of deficits and declining enrollment and is seeking a $37.5 million government bailout.

Birmingham Southern College has new leadership today. General Charles Krulak will become the new president of the school, taking the reigns officially on June first. He’s a retired U.S. Marine Commandant and former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Krulak has also worked in banking in the U.S. and Europe.

Today’s announcement caps a financially tumultuous period for Birmingham Southern. Accounting errors discovered last year forced the school to cut $10 million dollars from its budget, eliminate faculty and staff position and five programs. Krulak told WBHM’s Andrew Yeager he recognizes the sacrifices that have already been made, so he won’t take a salary or benefits his first year on the job.
