Bare Hands Closes

A fixture in Birmingham’s art scene will soon close. This week, Bare Hands Gallery announced it will shut its doors at end of the year. The gallery opened 14 years ago as place for contemporary Alabama artists to show their work. Bare Hands also served as a kind of community arts center–with everything from yoga classes to an annual celebration of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. But, the economic downturn took its toll on the nonprofit gallery. WBHM’s Bradley George spoke with Bare Hands owner and artistic director, Wendy Jarvis.

Bare Hands is planning one final exhibition. ‘Shine 2010: Going Out With a Bang!’ opens December 3. Wendy Jarvis also says the Dia de los Muertos celebration will continue under a new nonprofit. She talks about both events in this extended interview.
