Today, President Obama named Dr. Regina Benjamin as his nominee for Surgeon General. Dr Benjamin makes her home in Bayou La Batre, where she runs a clinic that treats all patients-regardless of their ability to pay. Dr. Benjamin’s work on minority and rural health issues has won her widespread acclaim, including a McArthur Genius Award. Dr. Regina Benjamin earned her MD at UAB. That’s also where she met Dr. William Curry. He’s Associate Dean for Primary Care and Rural Health in UAB’s School of Medicine. WBHM’s Bradley George spoke with Dr. Curry earlier today. He says he and Dr. Benjamin have worked together on many health issues.
