If Money Grew on Trees

Charitable giving is at an all-time high, but donations to the nation’s largest charities dropped in 2002 … the first decrease in more than a decade, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The newspaper attributes the drop to uncertainties about the economy and increased competition for money among charities – and some observers believe increased scrutiny of charities and philanthropists themselves might also play a role.

Executives from non-profit organizations across the state are gathered in Birmingham today for the 2004 NonProfit Summit. “Taking Charge of the Future” — that’s the catch-phrase for this year’s summit and it aptly captures the buzz in the philanthropic community — which is anxiously awaiting a massive transfer of wealth.
