Gulf States Newsroom Reporting Fellowship

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Salary: $47,500
Application deadline: June 30
Fellowship timeline: August 2022-July 2023

The Gulf States Newsroom, a regional collaboration among public radio stations in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and NPR, has established itself as a force for news coverage in the South. Now, we’re hiring a journalist for a year-long, paid fellowship to add even more reporting power to the region. This is an ideal opportunity for recent graduates and early-career journalists. All are welcome to apply.

Who We Are: The Gulf States Newsroom is an exciting partnership between public radio stations in Mississippi (MPB-Mississippi Public Broadcasting), Louisiana (WWNO and WRKF), Alabama (WBHM) and NPR. We’re working together as a regional newsroom to plan coverage, share resources and add reporting power in a story-rich region where too many local news outlets have disappeared. It’s part of NPR’s collaborative journalism network, an initiative designed to better connect NPR with local member stations to represent what’s happening around the United States.

About This Role:

The reporting fellow will join a team of award-winning regional reporters and editors who cover health care, wealth and poverty and race and equity. The fellow will have an opportunity to shadow the reporting team and carve out a beat based on their interests. They’ll cover a mix of stories across the region, filing daily news and features, field reporting and photography, audio production and digital writing. They will walk away with a portfolio of spots, sound-rich features, and digital stories, setting them up for a career in public radio or elsewhere in media. The Gulf States Newsroom is dedicated to training and strengthening reporting power and fellows will have the opportunity to participate in regular training sessions.

This position is based at WBHM in Birmingham, which won a highly-coveted national Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence in Small Market Radio in 2021. They will have the opportunity to visit other partner stations and report from other cities in the region.

A Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or a related field is required, or equivalent years of experience. Most importantly, applicants should be passionate about digging in and doing good journalism in this important region.

This role is eligible for health care benefits.
